Crazy Idea: Window A/C – improved?
Last summer I bought a small 8000 btu window a/c unit and used it whenever the temperature got unbearable in my room, which is often. The only problem is I can’t stand the noise with the window a/c in my small 10×10 office. I’ve had the idea for a while to get some ducting/tubing and just park it outside with a duct blowing the cold air in to me. I finally found some spare time and got to work with my prototype, using cardboard, some ducting I found at Home Depot (4×6 square to 4-inch round), and some Gorilla tape. I cut a box to capture the cold air and pipe it to the ducting (for a dryer), and finally into another piece of cardboard cut out to accommodate the other duct where the air would blow. It actually went together well and i feel some cold air blowing in. The unit by itself is enough to cool down the room, but I’m testing to see if my hack will cool it down nearly the same. We’ll wait and see. Anyway, I call this a redneck a/c because it looks really really tacky. But if it ends up working somewhat, I may work on improvements if I ever find the time. Pictures below:
