Crazy Idea: Window A/C – improved?
Last summer I bought a small 8000 btu window a/c unit and used it whenever the temperature got unbearable in my room, which is often. The only problem is I can’t stand the noise with the window a/c in my small 10×10 office. I’ve had the idea for a while to get some ducting/tubing and just park it outside with a duct blowing the cold air in to me. I finally found some spare time and got to work with my prototype, using cardboard, some ducting I found at Home Depot (4×6 square to 4-inch round), and some Gorilla tape. I cut a box to capture the cold air and pipe it to the ducting (for a dryer), and finally into another piece of cardboard cut out to accommodate the other duct where the air would blow. It actually went together well and i feel some cold air blowing in. The unit by itself is enough to cool down the room, but I’m testing to see if my hack will cool it down nearly the same. We’ll wait and see. Anyway, I call this a redneck a/c because it looks really really tacky. But if it ends up working somewhat, I may work on improvements if I ever find the time. Pictures below:

Y’all that theres not no bad idea y’alls got with the window AC and the dryer vent. Now I know this heres old but I’d just like to tell you somting about these here Air conditioners and somting you might be able to do to improve it if you’s still usin this.
Now thats a fine idea, hell something like this would be nice for many cause them big ol’ Window AC’s are always a pain, espically in windows like mines where they’s slidin sideways.
However, while this may help take the edge off the heat on them real hot old days, it ain’t really gonna work great nor have any efficiency at all, as it defeats the whole purpose of Air Conditioning.
The process of Air Conditioning is removing hot air and turnin it into chilled air. AC units do this by intaking hot air from the room and they suck it in through a filter and then it goes over them cold coils and then it becomes cold and goes out the vent. But the heat is transfered through the compressor and disipated through that there condenser coils in the back of the unit. Now with that setup all Y’alls doin is addin a bit of cold air, but you ain’t gettin rid of no hot air, well not much anyways the cold helps but only a bit.
You’ll really only need to figure out a way to make a vent for the intake or something, but in reality its just easier to find a way to mount in the window or if not through the wall. But after readin your article you say its cause you cant stand the noise it makes? Is it REAL loud? If so I’d condider sellin it [these sell QUICK] and buyin a quieter model. My Sharp is so quiet that you can’t hear it except for the quiet fan. But I’ll tell you it won’t work REAL great like this, but if it works then screw it! There ain’t nothin wrong with thinkin like a redneck! Trust me you should see some of my innovations!
Just be a Redneck and buy some intake ductwork for central AC systems and rig it up! Ducktape always works! And use plastic rolls to plug up uninslated areas and you’ll be fine. But shorten that hose its to long for that little fan but other than that great idea! I like it not tryin to put Y’all down or nothin like that don’t take it the wrong way but just givin you some tips to improve it if it ain’t workin real well, if it is then why do anything?
