After a short Hiatus I am back

I recently had a problem with the host of this website that made me take it down and bring it back up again. Unfortunately someone was able to gain access to a script and use it to run some DoS attack against some third party websites. So I had to purchase a new Linode with Debian 5 and I’m slowly moving everything back over. Its at least letting my take a look at all the sites I have that hadn’t been updated in a long while. Stay tuned.

Puerco Pibil

I gotta try to make this.

Oracle’s website for Java is horrible.

For some reason every time I try to browse the Javadocs on the Oracle website for the JRE I keep getting an error that the page cannot be displayed in Firefox. Then I decided to read about OpenJDK last night @http://openjdk.java.net/ and clicking General FAQ gives me a 404. Its like 1996 all over again. Should I be using the gopher:// protocol too?

Crazy Idea: Window A/C – improved?

Last summer I bought a small 8000 btu window a/c unit and used it whenever the temperature got unbearable in my room, which is often. The only problem is I can’t stand the noise with the window a/c in my small 10×10 office. I’ve had the idea for a while to get some ducting/tubing and just park it outside with a duct blowing the cold air in to me. I finally found some spare time and got to work with my prototype, using cardboard, some ducting I found at Home Depot (4×6 square to 4-inch round), and some Gorilla tape. I cut a box to capture the cold air and pipe it to the ducting (for a dryer), and finally into another piece of cardboard cut out to accommodate the other duct where the air would blow.  It actually went together well and i feel some cold air blowing in. The unit by itself is enough to cool down the room, but I’m testing to see if my hack will cool it down nearly the same. We’ll wait and see. Anyway, I call this a redneck a/c because it looks really really tacky. But if it ends up working somewhat, I may work on improvements if I ever find the time. Pictures below:

This doesn't look tacky -- Window A/C HackDoesn't look half bad :) -- Window A/C hack #2Okay, waiting for the neighbors to complain -- window a/c hack #3

Why the Android Skype app sucks

I have a Motorola Droid. I love it. Its changed my life. Well, maybe not that dramatic but it was definitely a step up from the old LG flip phone that was looking rather dated. I was excited to try out something new and I keep trying out new things. I have a rooted droid with Cyanogenmod and I love it. The frequent updates and customizations are wonderful. You can really see the power looking forward using one of these phones with video calling on the horizon the future is looking pretty cool. One thing that really sucks though is a crappy app. I’ve installed the Verizon-exclusive Skype app for my phone thinking it’d be nice to make wifi calls and such over the voip provider. But for some reason, which is beyond me, its 3G only. It doesn’t even try to work with WIFI, it just says you need to disable WIFI and be on a 3G network to make calls or use the app for messaging. What a load of crap. I do have a theory on why they’re doing this. Verizon either wants to convince you VOIP sucks and so does Skype by working only over somewhat unreliable 3G or they want you to use a lot of your data so they can overcharge you somehow. Thats why I’m uninstalling Skype and just using Fring instead. Its free and it makes Skype voice and video calls over wifi, 3g, whatever. And that makes you see how cool the future is. Being able to make a voip call over a cellular phone over wifi or 3g, doing a video chat, and chatting it up on the Skype IM service.

Had another Ocular Migraine

So I think I got this diagnosed correctly. I had another ocular migraine at my daughter’s birthday party yesterday. This time it was accompanied by a really bad headache. This is the first time I’ve had this happen when I’m out and about. It basically begins and my vision gets really blurry and I can’t make out people faces or objects. It really messes up my vision and basically makes me inoperable. This time it was also accompanied by a bad headache that is still lingering a bit today. It also causes usually causes me to want to throw up, I guess I get some nausea from it. Or just the fact that something is really wrong in my brain is causing me to freak out, which is probably the case. Anyhoo, if anyone is interested this link has some more detail and seems to fit:  click here.

Thank you Trader Joe’s, best damn Quesadillas

Let me just start out by saying I work from home, which gives me the opportunity to make some good meals on my lunch break. I love that aspect of it. I’m not making something in advance, like a sandwich that will be warm or throwing money away every day walking over to Chipotle, Habit, or Togo’s. So one of the quick things I can do during lunch is make a nice Quesadilla. Its quick and tasty. I think I’ve found my awesome ingredients too, thanks to Trader Joe’s. They have this Pepperjack Cheese and a bag of Frozen Carne Asada beef. And some damn tasty, as in authentic testing, real tasting, tortillas. Throwing these together is quick, takes me like 5 minutes, and is really really good. I suggest it. Stop by Trader Joe’s or even any grocery store and get some Pepperjack cheese. If you have a Trader Joe’s get some Tortillas from them, they look homemade, and some Carne Asada beef to warmup in advance. And you have a delicious meal.

Want to mix it up? Grab the trust Cast Iron skillet, red peppers and red onions, and some olive oil and cut them up fajita style. Throw those on for a loaded Quesadilla, its awesome. How long do you cook those? Well you cut them up, throw on the oil on the hot pan, spread around, throw the veggies down. Maybe 10 minutes with some salt. The onions will start to look a little brown and/or clearing and thats it.
